Cooke City may be a little hard to get to but once there you will discover a unique village town awaits. Its high elevation and location on the Beartooth Pass on U.S. Highway 212 makes it a road less traveled in the wintertime, yet the town has its devoted residents that are able to withstand the winter weather and heavy snowfall. The town boasts about 100 or so hardy residents that hunker down to wait out the long winters. In the summertime their population grows to around 300.
The pass is open only in summer months (approximately June-October); however, the town is accessible year-round by way of the Mammoth Hot Springs entrance at Yellowstone Park (U.S. Highway 89).
